Our Values

The Therapeutic Relationship

Many of our clients have tried therapy before. It looked right on paper, but it didn’t quite fit. At Stone Reef, the difference is the relationships we build with clients. We genuinely care about your progress and your goals. It’s not just about feeling comfortable and safe within the relationship, but it’s about working with someone who deeply understands what you’re going through and knows how to move forward. At Stone Reef, we’re engaged, attentive, and actively engaged in the work.

No Judgment

People often come into therapy carrying more than they’ve said out loud anywhere else. It’s an honor to be trusted with this vulnerable work and we approach this work with dignity respect. No labels, no assumptions, no judgment. We just focus on the patterns that have formed over time and what it will take to change them. At Stone Reef, we refuse to see our clients as broken, and we firmly believe that everyone has inner strength to change.

Person-Centred

Some of our clients have expressed fears about being put into a box due to a presenting concern such as addiction. This leads to a one-size fits all treatment plan that is the same for everyone, missing important nuances that can have a profound impact on therapy.

At Stone Reef, we appreciate that everyone has a different story and different preferences. We are person-centered to the core and we work with our clients to create an individualized treatment plan that works for them, while fostering their sense of agency and choice in the therapeutic process.

Strengthening Community

Promoting strong communities and giving back is a core part of who we are personally and professionally. We’ve seen how often people are shut out of therapy because of cost, so we created the pay-what-you-can- afford student counselling program. It’s one way we keep the door open for people who are ready for support but don’t have the same access.

We also spend time working directly with those who are unhoused, offering therapy in spaces that feel accessible to them. Some of the most meaningful work we’ve done has happened outside a traditional office.

Living and working on Vancouver Island shapes how we think about care. Being connected to the land matters, which is why we put time into clean-up efforts and resources into local forest restoration both on land and in the ocean.

We show up both in our work and in our community.
