What is CBT?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based psychotherapy designed to help you understand the ‘why’ behind your reactions and give you practical tools to change negative thought patterns.
When life has trained you to stay on guard, your mind can start working overtime. Thoughts race, emotions spike, and familiar coping habits take over—even when they no longer help. CBT slows this process down so you can see what is really happening, regain choice, and build confidence in yourself.
Is CBT Right for You?
CBT is scientifically backed and especially effective for people struggling with:
- Anxiety: Worry, social anxiety, or health-related fears.
- Depression: Low mood, numbness, hopelessness, or loss of motivation.
- Trauma: Hypervigilance, shame, and avoidance patterns.
- Addiction & Compulsivity: Managing urges, relapse cycles, and emotional triggers.
- Stress & Burnout: Feeling emotionally overwhelmed by life’s demands.
- The Inner Critic: Perfectionism, shame, and self-criticism.
The CBT Roadmap: How We Progress
Therapy follows a clear but flexible process, paced strictly to your needs:
Step 1: Clarify the Goal
We identify exactly what you want to be different in your life and what thought patterns or behaviors are blocking progress towards your goals.
Step 2: Map the Patterns
We don’t just hand you a CBT worksheet to fill out and read to your therapist like a weather report. We work together to uncover the specific thoughts and behaviors keeping you stuck.
Step 3: Dig Deeper
We work together to identify the root cause of current unhelpful thoughts, belief systems, and behaviors, while introducing more helpful ways of thinking, relating, and behaving.
Step 4: Life Practice
We introduce tangible tools you can test between sessions to build long-term stability and progress.

FAQs: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) differs from traditional talk therapy because it is more structured, time-limited, and focused on the goal of changing specific negative thought patterns and behaviors; whereas talk therapy is an open-ended exploration of past formative experiences.
| Feature | Traditional Talk Therapy | CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) |
| Primary Focus | Exploring past history. | Changing current thought patterns & behaviors. |
| Structure | Open-ended and exploratory. | Structured, goal-oriented, and skills-based. |
| Goal | Insight and emotional release. | Practical tools to manage current symptoms. |
| Homework | Infrequently assigned. | Skills often assigned between sessions. |
Sometimes simple practices are suggested to help you test new skills in between sessions, but we go based on your needs. We work at a pace that fits your life.
Not when it is practiced correctly. When done well, CBT skills aid other therapeutic processes. It helps with skills to challenge thoughts and behaviours that may arise from traumatic wounding.
CBT can look very different depending on the therapist. A rigid approach that is too homework heavy often fails for people with complex histories. Our approach is relational and trauma-informed, meaning we focus on your story first, and the tools second.
There is no set timeline. Some clients notice meaningful changes within a few sessions, while others use CBT as a long-term framework alongside deeper processing work.
