What Is Coaching?

Coaching is a structured, goal-oriented process designed to help you gain clarity, build momentum, and move forward with confidence.

Unlike psychotherapy, coaching does not focus on diagnosing or treating mental health conditions. Instead, it supports individuals who are functioning well and seeking strategic growth, improvement, or personal development.

At Stone Reef, we deeply know the issues we treat and what it takes to move forward in every-day life. Coaching is practical, forward-looking, and action-based. Coaching focuses on where you are going, not on processing trauma or healing past wounds.

Who Coaching Is For?

Coaching may be a good fit if you:

  • Feel stable in your mental health
    • Want clarity around career, relationships, recovery, or life direction
    • Are navigating challenges in life
    • Desire accountability and structured goal-setting
    • Want to strengthen communication, recovery, and relational skills
    • Are ready to take action

Coaching is not designed for trauma processing, active addiction management, or the treatment of depression, anxiety, or PTSD. If deeper emotional distress becomes apparent, we will openly discuss whether psychotherapy would be more appropriate.

How Coaching Works

Coaching sessions are structured and strategic. We typically focus on:

  1. Clarifying your objective
  2. Identifying obstacles and blind spots
  3. Building measurable action steps
  4. Strengthening accountability
  5. Reviewing progress and refining strategy

You remain responsible for implementation. Coaching provides structure, perspective, and momentum.

Sessions are:

Coaching vs Therapy

Coaching and therapy serve different purposes.

Addresses mental health conditions

Processes trauma and emotional wounds

Symptom reduction and stabilization

Involves diagnosis and treatment

Focuses on growth and action

Clarifies goals and builds forward momentum

Accountability and strategic development

Does not diagnose or treat mental health conditions

Both are valuable. The right choice depends on your current needs.

FAQs: Coaching

Is coaching therapy?

No. Coaching is not psychotherapy. It does not diagnose, treat, or manage mental health conditions.

Can coaching transition into therapy?

Yes. If emotional wounds or trauma emerge, we may recommend transitioning into therapy for appropriate care.

Do I need to be in crisis to start coaching?

No. Coaching is actually best designed for individuals who already have gone through treatment and are now ready for growth or accountability.

Is coaching confidential?

Yes. Sessions are private and conducted professionally, though coaching is not governed by clinical treatment frameworks.
